The United Nations System

Understanding the mandate, institutional context and coordination pathways.

How the United Nations is organized

The United Nations has six principal organs: the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, International Court of Justice, Secretariat and Trusteeship Council (which suspended operations in 1994).

The wider UN system includes specialized agencies, funds, programmes and related bodies. The UN Youth Delegate Programme is connected to Member State participation, particularly in the General Assembly and relevant youth-related processes; it is not a seventh principal organ.

Relevant youth engagement processes

General Assembly deliberations, ECOSOC-related dialogue, the High-level Political Forum and other appropriately accredited consultations may provide avenues for youth perspectives, depending on each process’s rules.
